A long, long time ago, I wrote a paper about my career goals. I wrote down exactly who I wanted to be. The goal was specific and clear. It was not until years later that I learned that writing down your goals will actually help you accomplish them. We might think about the goals that we have, but not necessarily act on achieving them - the steps we need to take.
Without even realizing what I had wrote, I had put something in my mind into action. That paper stated that I wanted to be a Professor (a Psychology Professor to be exact, but that's another story).
It's 2020, and I have been a Professor for 10 years, and in fact, the Chairwoman of the School of Business. But, it was not until about 2 years ago that I remembered that paper. All along, from when I wrote that paper, I had been taking the necessary steps to achieve my goal. While I did not give myself a timeline, or deadline, creating a SMART goal for yourself or your business, is smart!
Grab your notebook and a pen. Yes, write it down the old fashioned way. You can always take a picture after you write your goal so its on your phone. Then look at it frequently to help you stay focused.
S.M.A.R.T. Goals:
Specific - give yourself 1 direct goal, and be clear in your description.
Measurable - explain how will you track your progress.
Attainable - work towards that goal and avoid distractions.
Realistic - be honest. You know what you are capable of.
Timely - set a timeline, and most importantly, a deadline.
